Everest Base Camp, the starting point for climbing the world's tallest mountain, sits at an astonishing 17,598 feet (5,364 meters) above sea level. While commercial planes typically cruise higher, this elevation still places Base Camp in an extreme environment. Oxygen levels there are roughly half of what they are at sea level, making it incredibly challenging for the human body.
