In 1982, the United States officially recognized the Navajo Code Talkers, whose complex, unwritten language created the only oral military code in modern history that was never broken by an enemy.

During World War II, the U.S. Marines recruited hundreds of Navajo men to develop a communication system based on their native tongue. Because Navajo is an unwritten language with a distinct syntax, it provided a perfect foundation for an unbreakable code. These specialists could transmit messages in seconds that would take machines hours to decipher.
