A routine flight through a tropical thunderstorm turned into a nightmare in 1995 when a Boeing 737 collided with a volcano, leading to a total overhaul of aviation safety in Central America.

On August 9, 1995, Aviateca Flight 901 was descending toward San Salvador during a severe thunderstorm when it slammed into the side of the San Vicente volcano. The heavy rain and lightning masked the terrain, and all 65 people on board perished instantly in the high-altitude impact.
