The Battle of Mărășești began in August 1917 and became the most significant engagement on the Romanian front during the Great War. Despite being outnumbered and facing the elite forces of the German Ninth Army, Romanian soldiers held their ground with the defiant slogan 'Pe aici nu se trece' or 'They shall not pass.' Their stubborn resistance prevented the Central Powers from knocking Romania out of the war entirely.
