In July 1798, Napoleon's French forces faced the Mamluks, a medieval warrior elite that had ruled Egypt for centuries. Using a 'divisional square' formation, Napoleon created impenetrable walls of bayonets that neutralized the famous Mamluk cavalry charges. The victory effectively ended 700 years of Mamluk rule in the region.
