The city of La Paz ignited a continental revolution in 1809 by establishing the first independent government in Spanish America, led by locals who were tired of colonial rule.

While Napoleon's invasion of Spain left the empire in chaos, the citizens of La Paz seized the moment on July 16, 1809. Led by Pedro Domingo Murillo, they deposed the Spanish authorities and formed the Junta Tuitiva, the first sovereign government in the Americas to officially break from the Spanish Crown.
