In the aftermath of World War II, the British Crown formally annexed North Borneo, transforming a territory once ruled by a private company into a strategic royal colony in Southeast Asia.

On July 15, 1946, the British government officially annexed North Borneo, known today as the Malaysian state of Sabah. For decades prior, the region was governed by the North Borneo Chartered Company, a private entity. However, the devastation of the Japanese occupation during World War II left the company unable to afford the massive costs of reconstruction.
