The city of Pune was forever changed in 1961 when two dams failed simultaneously, unleashing a wall of water that claimed thousands of lives and forced a total urban redesign.

On July 12, 1961, the newly constructed Panshet Dam collapsed under heavy monsoon rains, causing a chain reaction that breached the downstream Khadakwasla Dam. Within hours, the city of Pune was submerged under several feet of water.
