During the Russo-Turkish War of 1770, a vastly outnumbered Russian force utilized bold tactical maneuvers to achieve a lopsided victory that permanently shifted the balance of power in Eastern Europe.
On July 7, 1770, Field Marshal Pyotr Rumyantsev led approximately 38,000 Russian troops against an Ottoman force nearly double that size at the Battle of Larga. Instead of adopting a traditional defensive posture, Rumyantsev utilized innovative mobile square formations to repel the Ottoman cavalry while his artillery provided devastatingly precise cover fire.
