In 1865, a Cherokee chief became the last Confederate general to surrender

The American Civil War reached its final military conclusion in June 1865, when Cherokee leader Stand Watie became the last Confederate general to officially surrender his command to Union forces.

While Robert E. Lee surrendered in April 1865, the Civil War did not truly end until June 23 of that year. On this day, Brigadier General Stand Watie, a leader of the Cherokee Nation, signed a cease-fire agreement at Doaksville. He was the only Native American to achieve the rank of general on either side during the conflict.
