In 1593, the seemingly unstoppable Ottoman Empire faced a shocking defeat at the Battle of Sisak. Despite being outnumbered nearly four to one, a combined force of Croatian, Austrian, and Slovenian troops used the triangular fortress and the confluence of the Sava and Kupa rivers to trap the invaders. The Ottoman commander, Telli Hasan Pasha, perished in the retreat along with thousands of his elite soldiers.
