In 1995, a landing gear malfunction led to a tragic mountain crash

When a routine landing gear malfunction distracted a flight crew in 1995, it triggered a chain of events that led a passenger plane directly into the rugged slopes of New Zealand's Tararua Range.

On June 9, 1995, Ansett New Zealand Flight 703 was approaching Palmerston North when the right main landing gear failed to extend.
