A desperate 1660 stand by French colonists changed the course of Iroquois history

A small group of French colonists and their allies fought a desperate five-day battle in 1660 that many historians believe saved the young settlement of Montreal from total destruction.

In May 1660, Adam Dollard des Ormeaux led a tiny force of 17 Frenchmen and about 40 allies against hundreds of Iroquois warriors at the Long Sault rapids. Though the French were eventually overwhelmed and killed, their fierce resistance stalled the Iroquois advance on the fledgling colonies of New France.
