In 1864, teenage military cadets helped win a major Civil War battle
The Battle of New Market in 1864 saw one of the most unusual deployments in military history when a group of teenage students was called into the heat of combat.
During the American Civil War on May 15, 1864, the Confederate army found itself desperately outnumbered in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. In a move of last resort, they called upon 257 cadets from the Virginia Military Institute, some as young as fifteen, to join the front lines.
