In May 1973, an Ilyushin Il-18 operating as Aeroflot Flight 6551 crashed near the city of Semey while en route from Novosibirsk to Tashkent. All 63 people on board perished when the aircraft suffered a catastrophic failure at high altitude. The investigation pointed to an uncontained fire in one of the engines that eventually led to a loss of control.
