On May 6, 1984, Pope John Paul II canonized 103 Korean martyrs in Seoul, marking the first time a canonization ceremony took place outside of Rome in modern history. The group included Andrew Kim Taegon, the first native Korean priest, and many laypeople who were executed during the 19th century.
