After a dramatic fall from power, Napoleon Bonaparte arrived at the tiny island of Elba in 1814 to begin a surprisingly busy exile as the sovereign of a miniature empire.
Following his forced abdication and the Treaty of Fontainebleau, Napoleon Bonaparte arrived at Portoferraio on May 4, 1814. Though he had once ruled nearly all of Europe, his new domain was a Mediterranean island only 86 square miles in size. Remarkably, the Allied powers allowed him to retain the title of Emperor and granted him a small personal guard and navy.
