In 1855, a 'filibuster' named William Walker set sail with a private army on a bizarre quest to seize Nicaragua and establish himself as its president.

William Walker departed San Francisco in May 1855 with a small group of mercenaries known as 'The Immortals.' His goal was to conquer Nicaragua and eventually join it to the United States as a slave state. Remarkably, he succeeded in taking control and was even inaugurated as president of Nicaragua in 1856.
