On May 2, 1982, the British nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror fired three torpedoes at the Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano. The ship sank in less than an hour, resulting in the loss of 323 lives. This marked the first time a nuclear-powered submarine had ever sunk an enemy vessel in wartime.
