As the Soviet army reached the heart of Berlin in 1945, the architect of the Third Reich chose a final, desperate exit within the concrete walls of his subterranean bunker.

On April 30, 1945, Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his underground Führerbunker as Soviet shells rained down on Berlin. Just one day after marrying his longtime companion Eva Braun, the dictator ended his life to avoid the humiliation of capture.
