The arrival of the HMS Endeavour at Botany Bay in 1770 marked the first recorded European contact with eastern Australia, an event that would fundamentally reshape the continent's indigenous and colonial history.
On April 29, 1770, Lieutenant James Cook sailed into a large inlet on Australia's eastern coast. Originally naming it Stingray Bay, he later changed it to Botany Bay to honor the vast collection of unique plants documented by the ship's naturalists, Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander.
