In one of the most staggering setbacks of the First World War, over 13,000 British and Indian soldiers were forced to surrender to Ottoman forces after a brutal five-month siege in Mesopotamia.

The Siege of Kut ended on April 29, 1916, marking a low point for British military prestige during World War I. After holding out for 147 days in the town of Kut-al-Amara, the 6th Indian Division was ravaged by starvation and disease before finally laying down their arms.
