Napoleon Bonaparte executed a masterclass in military maneuver in 1809, utilizing a daring split-force strategy to isolate and overwhelm the Austrian army during the pivotal opening of the Battle of Eckmühl.
On April 21, 1809, Napoleon demonstrated why he was the era's premier tactician by dividing his forces to strike the Austrian army from two sides. While two of his corps held the main enemy force at bay to the north, Napoleon personally led a lightning strike that drove two Austrian corps from the city of Landshut.
