On April 14, 2002, Hugo Chávez returned to the presidential palace in Caracas to resume power, ending one of the shortest-lived coups in modern history. Just two days earlier, military officers had arrested Chávez and installed a businessman as the interim leader. However, the new administration's immediate dissolution of the National Assembly sparked massive protests among Chávez's supporters.
