A outnumbered group of Dominican patriots utilized clever tactics and sheer determination in 1844 to defeat an invading army, forever securing their nation's independence at the Battle of Santiago.

On March 30, 1844, the Battle of Santiago, also known as the Battle of March 30th, became a turning point for the newly declared Dominican Republic. Led by General José María Imbert, the Dominican forces successfully defended the city against a much larger Haitian army seeking to reclaim the territory.
