During the height of World War I, the diverse 42nd 'Rainbow' Division made history by becoming the first American unit to hold a strategic sector entirely on its own.

In March 1918, General John J. Pershing made a pivotal decision to divert the 42nd 'Rainbow' Division from training to the front lines of the Baccarat sector. This marked the first time an American division took full responsibility for an entire sector without French assistance.
