The 1978 crash of a Balkan Bulgarian Airlines flight near Gabare remains a haunting mystery, as the cause of the disaster that killed 73 people was never officially determined.
A Tupolev Tu-134 took off from Sofia in 1978, bound for Warsaw, but suddenly plunged into a gorge near the village of Gabare just minutes into the flight. All 73 people on board perished, including members of the Polish national youth track and field team. To this day, it remains the deadliest aviation accident in Bulgarian history.
