Weeks before the first shots of the Civil War, the Confederacy adopted a constitution in 1861 that explicitly codified the right to own slaves, removing any ambiguity regarding their cause.

On March 11, 1861, delegates in Montgomery, Alabama, adopted the Constitution of the Confederate States of America. While modeled closely after the U.S. Constitution, this version included several critical changes that defined the new government's priorities.
