The Australia Act 1986 finally ended all legal power Britain held over Australia

Australia finally achieved full legal independence from the United Kingdom in 1986, closing a long chapter of colonial oversight and granting the nation total sovereignty over its own laws.

The Australia Act 1986 officially commenced on March 3, ending the ability of the British Parliament to legislate for Australia. Although Australia had been a federation since 1901, the United Kingdom still held residual legal powers, including the right for certain court cases to be appealed to the British Privy Council rather than staying within the Australian legal system.
