A frozen lake in Nova Scotia became the site of aviation history in 1909 when the Silver Dart took to the skies, marking the first powered flight in the British Empire.

Designed by a team that included Alexander Graham Bell, the Silver Dart soared across the icy surface of Bras d'Or Lake on February 23, 1909. Pilot J.A.D. McCurdy flew the wood-and-silk aircraft for about half a mile, reaching a height of 30 feet and making Canada a pioneer in the age of flight.
