The MS Mikhail Lermontov was a pride of the Soviet merchant fleet until it struck a reef near Cape Jackson on February 16, 1986. Despite having a local harbor master on board, the 500-foot liner was steered into a narrow, shallow passage where it suffered a fatal gash to its hull.
