Fed up with centuries of harsh imperial rule, a group of Serbian leaders gathered in a small village to elect a commander and ignite a revolution that would reshape the Balkans forever.

In February 1804, Serbian chieftains met in the village of Orasac to elect Djordje Petrovic, known as Karadjordje or 'Black George,' as their leader. This bold assembly launched the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire, which had occupied the region for nearly four centuries.
