The 1943 Battle of Krasny Bor pitted a massive Soviet force against 5,000 Spanish volunteers who held their ground in one of the bloodiest defensive stands of World War II.

In February 1943, the Soviet Red Army launched a massive offensive to break the Siege of Leningrad once and for all. They collided with the 'Blue Division,' a unit of Spanish volunteers fighting alongside German forces at Krasny Bor. Despite being outnumbered nearly ten to one and facing a terrifying artillery barrage of 800 guns, the Spanish troops held their positions for hours in the freezing snow.
