Grenada became the first of the Windward Islands to gain independence in 1974

Grenada made history in 1974 by becoming the first of the Windward Islands to break away from British rule, ending centuries of colonial governance to become a sovereign nation.

Grenada’s move inspired neighboring islands in the Windwards chain to pursue their own paths to independence.
