When the Red Army arrived at Auschwitz in 1945, they discovered 7,000 survivors left behind by retreating Nazi guards who had attempted to hide the evidence of their horrific crimes.
On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers entered the Auschwitz-Birkenau complex, the largest German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. They found several thousand prisoners who were too ill or weak to join the 'death marches' forced upon others as the Nazis fled. The liberators were met with scenes of unimaginable suffering, finding piles of belongings and massive evidence of industrial-scale genocide.
