On January 23, 1958, Venezuelan dictator Marcos Pérez Jiménez fled to the United States following a general strike and a violent popular uprising. Despite his efforts to modernize Caracas with grand architectural projects, his regime's brutal secret police and suppression of liberty eventually united the military and the public against him.
