In a desperate attempt to halt the collapse of the Soviet Union, tanks were sent into Vilnius in 1991 to suppress Lithuania's peaceful movement for regained independence.

During the early hours of January 13, 1991, Soviet special forces and tanks attacked the Vilnius TV Tower and Parliament building to crush Lithuania's independence movement. Thousands of unarmed civilians formed human shields, singing traditional songs to defy the military presence.
