Against overwhelming odds on January 10, 1475, Stephen the Great defended Moldavia from an Ottoman invasion force nearly three times the size of his own. By luring the Ottoman troops into a foggy, marshy valley near Vaslui, Stephen neutralized their superior numbers. The ground was so soft that the Ottoman cavalry became trapped, allowing the Moldavians to secure a total victory.
