A thick blanket of fog caused a tragic 2003 aviation disaster in Turkey

Visibility dropped to near zero when Turkish Airlines Flight 634 attempted a perilous landing in Diyarbakır, leading to one of the most devastating aviation accidents in the nation's history.

On January 8, 2003, an Avro RJ100 regional jet carrying 80 people approached Diyarbakır Airport amidst an incredibly dense fog. Despite the low visibility, the crew attempted to land on a runway that lacked an instrument landing system. The aircraft struck the ground nearly 3,000 feet short of the runway threshold, breaking into three pieces and catching fire.
