The nation of Bermuda was founded in 1609 after a British admiral deliberately ran his sinking flagship into a coral reef to save hundreds of stranded colonists.
Bermuda's history as a colony began with a desperate act of survival. In June 1609, the Sea Venture was part of a fleet heading to resupply Jamestown when a hurricane battered the ship, filling the hold with nine feet of water. Recognizing the ship was doomed, Admiral Sir George Somers spotted the reefs of Bermuda—an island sailors previously avoided as the 'Isle of Devils'—and intentionally crashed the vessel between two rocks to prevent it from foundering.
