The High Plains Aquifer holds a staggering amount of ancient groundwater beneath eight American states, containing enough liquid to fill all five Great Lakes more than twice over.

The High Plains Aquifer, which includes the famous Ogallala Aquifer, is one of the largest freshwater systems in the world. It stretches across 174,000 square miles from South Dakota to Texas, sustaining nearly one-fifth of the annual United States agricultural harvest. This massive underground reservoir formed millions of years ago as water became trapped in layers of sand, gravel, and clay.
