Atatürk adopted a surname that literally means father of the Turks
Mustafa Kemal, the visionary founder of modern Turkey, was granted the unique surname Atatürk by parliament to honor his role as the symbolic father of the Turkish nation.
Following the 1934 Surname Law, which required all Turkish citizens to adopt a hereditary family name, the Grand National Assembly bestowed the title Atatürk upon Mustafa Kemal. The name translates literally to Father of the Turks and was reserved exclusively for him, meaning no other person can legally use it.
