Underwater hockey players use short sticks to push a lead puck
Athletes competing in the unique sport of underwater hockey hold their breath while using specialized foot-long sticks to maneuver a heavy lead puck across the bottom of a swimming pool.
Underwater hockey, also known as Octopush, began in 1954 as a way for divers to stay active during the winter months. Players wear fins, masks, and snorkels while diving to the pool floor to engage in fast-paced tactical play. Because the three-pound puck is made of lead coated in protective rubber, it stays firmly on the bottom rather than floating away.
