The first basketball games were played with actual peach baskets
When Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in 1891, he used two wooden peach baskets nailed to a balcony railing as the very first goals for his new indoor sport.
Dr. James Naismith created basketball at Springfield College to keep students active during harsh Massachusetts winters. These original peach baskets were entirely closed at the bottom, meaning the game had to be paused after every successful shot so a janitor could climb a ladder to retrieve the ball.
