Italy reached and eventually won the 1968 European Championship after a scoreless semi-final against the Soviet Union was decided by a referee's coin toss in the dressing room.
Italy advanced to the 1968 European Championship final because of a ten-franc piece. After 120 minutes of play in Naples, the semi-final between Italy and the Soviet Union remained a 0-0 deadlock. Since the regulatory framework of the era lacked penalty shootouts, referee Kurt Tschenscher summoned the captains to the dressing room for a coin toss.
