Detox foot baths claim to draw out toxins through your feet, turning the water murky as 'proof.' These popular spa treatments, which emerged in the early 2000s, use an electrical device in saltwater to supposedly attract positively charged toxins. However, scientific tests reveal the dramatic color change, from rusty brown to black, is simply the metal electrodes corroding and reacting with minerals in the water, a process called electrolysis. This discoloration happens even without feet in the basin, proving no toxins are being extracted. While harmless, relying on such methods can delay seeking effective health solutions.
