The emojis we use daily originated in Japan in 1999, long before smartphones. Designer Shigetaka Kurita created 176 simple, 12x12 pixel icons for NTT DoCoMo's mobile internet platform. These black-and-white pictograms helped users express emotions and ideas on early cell phones, drawing inspiration from everyday Japanese life and manga.
