Earth hums with radio waves from lightning

Lightning strikes continuously generate radio waves that resonate globally, creating Earth's persistent electromagnetic pulse, a natural phenomenon influencing our planet's electrical environment.

Every second, lightning strikes about 50 times worldwide, each flash sending out powerful radio waves. These waves, mostly between 3 and 60 hertz, travel through a natural tunnel formed by Earth's surface and upper atmosphere. Discovered in 1952, these "Schumann resonances" create a constant global electromagnetic field.
