Karl Marx, a 19th-century philosopher, fundamentally changed how we see history. He proposed that societal development isn't random, but driven by constant conflict between opposing classes, like the wealthy bourgeoisie and the working-class proletariat. This idea, called historical materialism, was detailed in his influential works, The Communist Manifesto (1848) and Das Kapital (starting 1867).
