Korfball: a sport designed for gender equality
Korfball, a dynamic team sport invented in 1902, uniquely combines basketball and netball with mandatory mixed-gender teams, promoting equality and skill over physical advantage.
Korfball is a unique team sport blending basketball and netball, but with a crucial difference: it mandates mixed-gender teams. Invented in 1902 by a Dutch schoolteacher, it was specifically designed to include both boys and girls fairly. Each team of eight players has four men and four women, playing on a court with a raised hoop, or 'korf,' without a backboard. This structure challenges traditional sports segregation, emphasizing skill over brute strength and fostering cooperation. Korfball is now played in over 70 countries and was even demonstrated at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics.
